Introduction

Probably through several processes that interact, rather than through a single cause. Research primarily points to learning processes, the transfer of arousal to other stimuli and social influences. In addition, feet as a body part have particular characteristics that almost invite such associations. How this unfolded for you personally can no longer be reconstructed precisely in retrospect. But the mechanisms can be described well.

What the Research Says

A systematic review from 2025 examined 47 theories on the development of atypical sexual interests. The researchers judged only seven of them to be genuinely well substantiated. These seven assume that several processes interact. They primarily cite conditioning, the transfer of arousal, social learning experiences and difficulties in dealing with sexuality considered conventional. It is important that the review concerned atypical sexual interests in general, not feet specifically. Applied to foot fetishism, the processes can be described roughly as follows.

Conditioning: When Stimuli Become Associated

When a particular stimulus occurs repeatedly together with arousal or desire, it can eventually trigger arousal itself. This principle is well known in learning psychology. As early as 1966, in a small experiment, the psychologist Stanley Rachman showed that a short-term sexual response to the image of a woman's boot could be developed in young men. A research group led by neuroscientist James Pfaus even considers such learning processes the most likely route through which sexual preferences arise, but concedes that they can scarcely be demonstrated directly in humans.

Arousal Transfer: When Tension Looks for a Place

Arousal sometimes arises from a completely different source, such as excitement, tension or a strong emotion. This arousal can attach itself to a stimulus that happens to be present. That is precisely what the French psychologist Alfred Binet had in mind as early as 1887 when he suggested that an incidental detail can become deeply imprinted in an emotionally charged situation. If feet played a role at such a moment, they can later repeatedly reawaken the tension felt then.

Social Learning: What Feet Mean

People also learn what things mean. Feet are strongly charged culturally. In religious art, they stood for humility and closeness to the earth. Anyone who places themselves at someone else's feet changes their position, spatially and emotionally. In China, small feet were considered especially desirable for centuries, so much so that women's feet were bound under great pain. Such meanings flow into fantasies, often without one noticing it.

And Uncertainty About “Conventional” Sexuality?

Some theories also suggest that difficulties or insecurities with sexuality considered conventional may contribute to arousal shifting to other stimuli. This has not been established for foot fetishes. Many people with a foot fetish also have a completely ordinary, fulfilling sexuality. In studies by Giselle Rees and Justin Garcia, the majority of people with an object fetish reported being aroused and sexually active even without their fetish object.

Why Feet in Particular?

There are probably several reasons why such processes become attached to feet so often. Feet are constantly visible in everyday life, unlike many other erotically charged body zones. They are both intimate and everyday. And there is the well-known idea that the areas for feet and genitals in the brain lie next to each other. This explanation is popular, but direct evidence that this proximity causes a foot fetish is still lacking. I therefore regard it as a hypothesis, not the answer.

How a Foot Fetish Works Once It Has Developed

From my own experience, in my book I describe four levels on which a fetish works. The first is the trigger, such as a foot. The second is fantasy, an inner story that the sight sets in motion. Only at the third level does physical arousal arise from it, and at the fourth it can lead to action.

I consider the second level the actual core. A major error that has been made repeatedly for more than a hundred years is the assumption that a fetish works directly from the object to arousal. This overlooks the fantasy that lies in between. Emergence therefore means above all: a stimulus and an inner story have become closely connected.

Why the Exact Cause Remains Open

Many people look in their past for the one trigger. But memories arise in retrospect, and some scenes acquire a meaning in the process that they may not have had at the time. Based on current knowledge, it cannot be reliably said for any individual which experience triggered their fetish.

For one's own life, this is often even a relief. No one chooses what arouses them, and no one is to blame for it. More important than the why is the question of how you live with your fetish today.
