Introduction
Research does not know of a single cause, but there are good reasons why shoes in particular can have such a powerful effect. For centuries, shoes have been symbols of status, power and femininity. They change how a person stands, walks and comes across. And they are everywhere. How this becomes a fetish in one individual cannot be reconstructed precisely. But a few building blocks can be named.

Shoes are symbols
Even in the art of earlier centuries, shoes conveyed status and power. The shoes someone wore revealed something about their position. This significance has never entirely disappeared. To this day, high heels stand for elegance and self-confidence, boots for strength, sneakers for casualness. A shoe is never just a shoe. It always tells a small story about the person wearing it.
For many people with a shoe fetish, this is precisely where the appeal lies. It lies less in the leather or the heel itself than in what the shoe represents.

Shoes change people
A second building block is their effect on the body. A high heel raises the wearer up and changes posture and gait. A boot seems substantial, a delicate pump elegant. Shoes shape presence, often without any conscious effort on the part of the person wearing them.
I have experienced for myself just how powerful this effect is. For many years, my internal pattern was clear: high heels, no flat boots. Then, during a video shoot, a woman appeared so self-confident and dominant that her riding boots suddenly aroused me strongly, even though they did not correspond to my fetish at all. It was not the shoe. It was the attitude that it made visible.

What learning might have to do with it
Research considers learning processes plausible in the development of sexual preferences. Of all things, a women’s boot played a role in one of the best-known experiments. In 1966, the psychologist Stanley Rachman repeatedly showed a small group of young men an image of a boot together with erotic photographs. After a while, some also responded to the boot alone. However, the response lasted only a short time, and only nine participants were involved.
A systematic review from 2025 examined 47 theories on the development of unusual sexual interests. The best-substantiated ones assume that several processes interact, such as conditioning, social learning and the transfer of arousal to other stimuli. Not one of them identifies a single cause. And whether a particular experience was decisive for you cannot be determined reliably in retrospect.

The environment shapes taste
What fascinates me most is this: a shoe fetish is apparently not only a matter of its beginnings, but also of the environment. In my early twenties, inexpensive high heels, the kind you could buy in any shoe shop at the time, excited me. Then I became a fashion photographer and worked with shoes by Gucci, Prada or Casadei, the kind one knew from VOGUE. Gradually, the cheap shoes lost their appeal. Today, it is primarily high-quality designer shoes that arouse me. As a photographer, I used every opportunity at the time to bring high heels into the image, much as Quentin Tarantino later did in his films. Not conspicuously, but as a natural part of the visual world.
This shows how strongly what we see and experience every day shapes our fetish. It does not disappear, but new influences are added and displace what already exists. Anyone who grows up in a culture in which shoes are as highly charged as they are in ours has many corresponding opportunities for arousal and shoes to become linked.

Why not everyone has a shoe fetish
If shoes are so ubiquitous and meaningful, why does not everyone have a shoe fetish? I suspect that some people have a basic predisposition that makes it more likely for their arousal to become closely tied to certain stimuli. What it then focuses on depends on the environment. This is my hypothesis, not an established finding. But it explains to me why two people in the same world can react so differently to the same shoe.

What the shoe actually triggers
After more than forty years with my own fetish, I am convinced that the shoe itself is only the trigger. The actual arousal arises in the story that unfolds around it in the mind: an attitude, a mood, a role. That is why, for me, the most exciting question is not where your shoe fetish comes from. Rather, it is what story your shoe tells.
