Introduction

Most of the time, not in detail, but you may be honest if the conversation turns to it. A first date is about getting to know a person, not about disclosing your own sexuality completely. Still, an initial, gentle hint can certainly be appropriate, especially if the topic arises naturally. That is exactly what happened to me with the woman who is now my wife.

What a first date should accomplish

A first date is a cautious process of getting to know each other. Both people want to find out whether they connect as people, whether they enjoy spending time together, and whether there should be a second meeting. A detailed conversation about fetishes can easily overwhelm this delicate getting-to-know-you phase. Not because a fetish is something bad, but because that much intimacy at such an early point comes too quickly for many people.

At the same time, I think it is right to address a fetish early in a relationship. A first date is not necessarily the right moment for that. But it can be a good beginning.

How it was for me

When I got to know the woman who is now my wife, we discovered on the very first evening that we shared an enthusiasm for high heels. She used to work as a model and has a passion for beautiful shoes herself. The conversation came to the subject quite naturally. That same evening, I told her in detail on the phone about my shoe fetish.

That was a lucky coincidence, and it does not work that way on every first date. But it shows this: when a door opens, you may walk through it.

When the topic comes up naturally

Sometimes, on a first date, the conversation turns to fashion, shoes, or preferences. Perhaps she asks what you like about a woman, or she tells you about her shoe collection. Then you can be honest without telling her everything right away. For example:

Such sentences are honest, light, and leave room. How she reacts often already tells you a great deal about how open she is to the topic.

  • “I have to admit, beautiful shoes always catch my eye immediately.”
  • “I have a bit of a weakness for high heels, but I will tell you more about that another time.”
  • “I noticed your boots as soon as you walked in.”

What you are better off avoiding on a first date

A few things can quickly end a promising first meeting:

  • Detailed descriptions of your fantasies. That is too much, too soon.
  • Conspicuously staring at her feet or shoes. She will notice it, and it can quickly come across as uncomfortable.
  • Requests or insinuations, for example, asking whether she might take off her shoes or send you photos.
  • Comments about details of her body that she cannot influence, such as the size or shape of her feet.
  • Comparisons with other women, whether former partners or celebrities.

How to prepare the ground for later

Even if the fetish does not become a topic on the first date, you can prepare the way for a later conversation. Ask her about her preferences, her wishes, and what she likes. Be genuinely curious. Those who take an interest in the other person’s world create an atmosphere in which their own wishes can have a place later as well.

In my experience, the best conversation about your own fetish often begins with her wishes. At some point, she may ask on her own what excites you. At the latest, before things become intimate or before you commit to a serious relationship, she should know.

When you date through fetish platforms

It is different if you met your date through a platform or community expressly intended for people with such preferences. Then the topic is on the table from the start, and an open conversation about it is completely normal at the first meeting. But take care of your safety there as well: meet in a public place and do not share identifiable photos too early.

When she reacts with discomfort

If she reacts reservedly to a gentle hint, take that seriously and change the subject. Initial discomfort is not yet rejection. Sometimes a person simply needs time for a new piece of information to find its place. And if it truly is not a good fit, you will find out early, before you have built up a great deal.

What remains

On a first date, this applies: be honest, but measured. You do not have to hide your fetish, but you do not have to lay it all out either. A small, friendly hint at the right time is often worth more than any grand revelation.
