01 · Fetish Communication
Introduction
By putting your wish as a genuine question, one to which a no is just as welcome as a yes. A respectful request is specific, kind, and always gives your partner an easy way out. And you answer a no with a calm “Okay,” not with a second round. Here I show what that can sound like in practice.

What makes a good request
A request without pressure has a few characteristics. It is voluntary, and you can feel that. It is specific, so that your partner knows what she is getting into. It is small enough not to be overwhelming. And it relates to your partner, not to feet or shoes in general.
In my book, I describe openness as an invitation, not as an obligation. That is exactly how every individual request should sound: as an invitation that can be accepted or declined kindly.

Not like this; better like this
Often, the difference lies in just a few words. The following overview shows how a pushy formulation becomes a respectful one:
- This is how pressure arises: “You are going to wear the high heels today, right?” — This remains an invitation: “Would you like to wear the high heels this evening? If not, that is completely fine.”
- This is how pressure arises: “Other women do it too.” — This remains an invitation: “I would be happy, but only if it feels good to you.”
- This is how pressure arises: “Just once, please.” — This remains an invitation: “Would you like to think about it? You do not have to decide anything now.”
- This is how pressure arises: “If you loved me …” — This remains an invitation: “I know that this is not everyone’s thing.”
- This is how pressure arises: “Why not?” after a no — This remains an invitation: “Okay. Thank you for telling me honestly.”

Provide the way out right away
A particularly helpful habit is to provide the way out already in the question. Sentences such as “If not, that is okay” or “Just tell me if it is too much for you” take the pressure away. They show your partner that she risks nothing by saying no—neither your mood nor the atmosphere between you.
The timing also matters. A request in the middle of sex, during an argument, or under time pressure almost inevitably creates pressure. A calm moment, in which no one has to decide immediately, makes it easier for both of you. And if she asks why you like it, answer honestly and relate it to her.
05 · Fetish Communication
Start small
It helps to begin with a small, specific wish rather than a big fantasy. A particular pair of shoes for a special occasion, a foot massage, a compliment that you deliberately give her. Such gestures leave room without overwhelming her. Anyone who tells or demands everything all at once makes it hard for the other person to respond in a relaxed way.
06 · Fetish Communication
Together rather than one-sided
A nice option is to open the subject in both directions. Some couples independently write a list of things they would like, might try, and definitely do not want. Then they compare them. This way, your wishes are not alone in the room, and hers have just as much space. I call this the 50/50 rule: if you want her to engage with your fetish, you should be just as open to her fantasies.
07 · Fetish Communication
Accepting a no
When she says no, your reaction is decisive for whether she will answer you openly again next time. A calm “Okay” is enough. Do not ask why, do not explain again how important it is to you, and do not let the atmosphere turn sour. Your disappointment is justified, but it is your responsibility, not hers.
I know from personal experience how easily you can overlook the other person’s boundaries when you are very occupied with your own wishes. For years, I expected my wife to play a role that she did not want at all. Only when I stopped doing that did something between us change for the better.

A no is not the end
A no to a particular request does not mean that you can never speak about the subject again. But it does mean that you do not keep bringing it up again and again. If something changes for her, she will tell you, especially when she has experienced that a no is safe with you. This very sense of safety is often the best condition for a yes to become possible at some point after all.
